Barcelona vs. PSG in the Champions League, a 'Modern Classic' of European football

Barcelona and PSG will meet again this Tuesday, 16 February 2021 at the Camp Nou for the Champions League.

From their Champions League quarterfinal duel in 1995 to the historic 'comeback' of 2017, the rivalry between FC Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain has grown and on Tuesday they cross their paths again in the first leg of the round of 16 final of the Champions League 2020-2021.

Paris Saint-Germain and FC Barcelona duels began their history on March 1, 1995, in the first quarter-final of the League of Champions played by the young club of the French capital. It was a real struggle between David and Goliath, as the Catalan team had been European champion in 1992 and runner-up in 1994.

A goal from George Weah (minute 54) responded to the opening of the scoring, which had been achieved for the local Igor Korneyev (48). The match ended 1-1 and everything was open for the return.

PSG and Barça met again in Rotterdam (Holland) to play in the Cup Winners' Cup final, then the second most important competition in the 'Old Continent' and currently disappeared.

PSG, champion in that tournament in 1996, encountered a phenomenon that embittered the target in 1997, Ronaldo.

The new Qatari owner of PSG arrived in 2011; put the League of Champions at the top of their wish list. In his second season, with leaders such as Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Thiago Silva, his dream took shape and the Paris team reached the quarterfinals, where chance matched it with Barça.

PSG arrived at Camp Nou with the obligation to score, after a 2-2 draw in the first leg, achieved in the last second thanks to Blaise Matuidi.

Between 2013 and 2016, PSG fell four times in the quarterfinals, two of them against Barcelona, in 2013 and then in 2015 (1-3, 0-2). In the last 16 of the 2016-2017 campaign, PSG then led by Unai Emery again faced Barcelona. The first round seemed to give PSG a quarterfinal ticket, which won 4-0 in the first leg in France.
