A goal from Serge Gnabry gave Germany a tight 1-0 victory over Romania in a match in which, despite their territorial dominance, Joachim Löw's team struggled in the first half to generate scoring chances and in the second he failed in front of the opposing goal.
In the final minutes, Romania,
who had done little in attack, had two arrivals that were able to turn a game
in which they stayed alive thanks to saves from goalkeeper Florin Nita.
Germany took to the field with the same team
that had beaten Iceland 3-0, but their performance did not reach the same level
of that match.
In the 16th minute, the goal came in a play that
originated with a long pass from Antonio Rüdiger that surpassed the Romanian
defense and left Havertz in the area, where he launched across and Gnabry
scored from close range.
Then, except for a Joshua Kimmich shot to the crossbar from
outside the area in the 19th minute, the German chances were
conspicuous by their absence despite a clear territorial dominance.
The defensive key for the Romanians was trying to get Kimmich out of the game, which made it
difficult for Germany to circulate the ball in search of spaces.
In the second part, Germany created more danger. Nita had
more work than in the first half and shone against shots from Loen Goretzka, in
the 50th minute, Ganbry, in the 58th and Gundogan, in the
59th.
Then, in the 63rd, Sané missed a great chance by finishing
off wide inside from the small area behind a wall with Gnabry. Later, in the 79th
minute, it was Timo Werner who failed against Nita.
